What is Apache Cassandra?

Apache Cassandra is the leading open-source and NoSQL distributed database for Big Data. Cassandra was open-sourced by Facebook in 2008, and is now in widespread use in all verticals. An Apache Software Foundation project, it has committers and contributors from many companies, including Acunu. The technology underlying Cassandra is a mixture of Amazon's Dynamo (a fully distributed, tunably-consistent store) and Google's BigTable (offering a rich semi-structured data model).

Why Cassandra?

Highly Scalable, Proven: Cassandra can handle very large amounts of data across multiple data centers with no single point of failure, providing enterprises with extremely high database performance and availability. It is in production use at Netflix, Twitter, Rackspace, Cisco, UrbanAirship, Reddit, Digg, and many more companies with large, highly active data sets.

Fault tolerant: Data is automatically replicated to multiple nodes for fault-tolerance. Replication across multiple data centers is supported. Failed nodes can be replaced with no downtime.

Fully decentralized, no 'single point of failure': Every node in the cluster is identical. There are no network bottlenecks. There are no single points of failure.

Tunable consistency and replication: Choose between synchronous or asynchronous replication for each update. Highly available asynchronous operations are optimized with features like Hinted Handoff and Read Repair.

Rich, flexible data model: Allows efficient use for many applications beyond simple key/value.

Elastic and incremental expansion: Read and write throughput both increase linearly as new machines are added, with no downtime or interruption to applications.

Multi-data center support: Cassandra is suitable for applications that can't afford to lose data, even when an entire data center goes down.

Fully supported by Acunu's world-class team: Acunu provides full professional training and support services for Apache Cassandra, in addition to offering its own distribution utilising the Acunu Storage Core.
